About Ridgeway
Small by design
Ridgeway Tutors started from a fairly ordinary observation: the large agencies are very good at finding you a tutor quickly, and much less good at everything that happens afterwards.
So we built the opposite. A small group of tutors, a limited number of students each term, and a service where the lesson is the start of the work rather than all of it. The homework written afterwards, the problem sheet built around one misconception, the message answered on a Sunday evening: that is where most of the progress actually happens.
A lot of what we teach is how to learn. How to structure revision, how to read a mark scheme, how to get into an unfamiliar problem, how to tell the difference between recognising something and understanding it. Those habits outlast the syllabus, which in the long run matters more than any single set of results.
Ridgeway began in Wimbledon, teaching students from the schools around it. We now teach across London in person, and globally online, across Maths, the Sciences and admissions.

How we choose our tutors

Professional standing
Our tutors have gone on to do well outside academia too, which is what lets us give useful advice on admissions and applications rather than only on content.
Specialist, not generalist
An A-Level mechanics specialist and an organic chemistry mechanisms specialist aren't interchangeable, and we don't treat them as though they are.

Philosophy
What we believe
Understanding beats memorisation
A memorised method fails the moment a question is worded unfamiliarly. We teach students to derive, reason and check their own work, so an unseen question is a puzzle rather than a wall.
The work between lessons is the work
One hour a week changes very little on its own. Homework written for the student, marked properly, and a tutor who answers questions in between are what turn a lesson into progress.
Honesty over reassurance
We'll tell you what grade the current trajectory leads to and what it would take to change it. Parents get a clear written picture after every session, not a summary at the end of term.
Independence is the goal
The best outcome is a student who stops needing us, and who leaves with study habits and subject knowledge strong enough to carry them through the next stage on their own.

Application review and interview
Our tutor management team will review your materials. If your profile aligns with our standards and subject needs, you will be invited to an interview and a short sample-lesson assessment. This helps us understand your teaching style, clarity of explanation, and ability to support students effectively.
References and safeguarding
Successful candidates will be asked to provide two references and complete a DBS check. Safeguarding is central to our work, and we require all tutors to meet these requirements before joining the team.

Once onboarding is complete, you will officially join Ridgeway Tutors. You'll gain access to our support systems, communication channels and student-matching process, allowing you to begin working with families who need your expertise.
